Things On My Mind.

My roommmate: is annoying me. She ignores me and acts like I intimidate her, and the next day will just walk up to me and talk to me like we're friends. Do you like me or NOT?! I understand people have shy tendencies (including myself), but it's like she's bi-polar with whether or not she wants to talk to me. Granted, at least she is quiet and not messy. But I'm realizing more and more that we are complete opposites (which some people say, make the best roommates) because of the following: she does not work or go to class - I work two jobs and take a class, she eats unhealthy - I eat very healthy, she's quiet - I am clearly not.

Dogs: Why am I scared of dogs? My parents said it was because growing up, anytime we saw a dog, that my mom would stop and yell at it to go away. Basically, a learned behavior. You would think being 19 years old I would have dropped this "learned behavior." I've concluded that I'm scared of big dogs, and just do not like little dogs. But, in general, I do not like dogs... I don't like when they sniff me, bark, try to lick me, and I especially do not like when they try to jump on me. That's the worst.

Relationships: First and foremost, I just want to clarify that I do not think that I need a guy to be happy in life. I am fairly happy with life right now, actually. But, it seems like many of my friends or people I know either have someone, or are in the process of having someone. I, on the other hand, have no future prospects. Yes, there are a few I admire, but I have that feeling that I did in high school - I am always just "the friend." And that feeling is getting old.

Faith: I'm in no way shape or form the perfect Christian, not even close. I do not go to church every week, partly because of schedule/lack of someone to go with - and, because I fully agree with a statement I heard once: "Going to church every week doesn't make you a Christian anymore than sitting in a garage every day makes you a car." I'm not saying that everyone should be Christian either, that is your own choice. What frustrates/confuses me is people who say/claim/believe they are Christians but don't rely on God.

Diabetes: This is what is confusing/frustrating me most right now. I fully admit that I did not use to check as much as I should have. I had/have a high A1C (10.1% to be exact). I went to diabetes camp, came back. I have not changed my insulin or exercise, and my eating has only slightly changed (I now fully cook for myself and don't go to the cafeteria - even then, I eat as healthy as possible and ate the accurate amount of calories). Since I've returned to camp, my blood sugars have been perfect. Like insanely. I DON'T UNDERSTAND. Though, instead of being apprehensive and nervous like I was last week... I am excited and anxious. I hope that my new endocrinologist will actually participate in my care and listen to me.

People: This is kind of a broad thought. But, I have a few points. First of all, why do people not open up and talk? I understand at some points (I do this sometimes) you just do not want to talk about what's bothering you. But, do you realize how much better it is to let things out? Some people don't want to feel like other people's problems. I have personally never felt like a friend who wanted to talk to me was a problem. Second, last night I said, "Wish I was important enough to get away with that..." but really, I don't. I don't want to be important or a big enough of a "star" to get away with things. I think those people sometimes come off conceited. Third, I wish we stood up for ourselves more. I've gotten a lot better at this, towards friends and family... and just in general. But, I could do it more often. And, I wish other people did. I think back when I let people walk all over me, and I really don't know how I stood it.

Myself: I'm happy with how far I've come over the last year. I'm not as shy, I'm more outgoing. I'm very driven, always have been though (or at least I think so). I think I've learned a lot about people and myself through different situations and people who have come into (and out) of my life. I have become more confident, but I still wish I didn't let what other people think of me get to me. I wish I didn't let people's comments or actions get to me as much as they do. I was told that I'm good at balancing things; work-out/relax, social life/working, fun/to-do lists... but I think I take after my sister and dad in the way that I work and whatnot a lot more than I allow myself to have fun and kick-back. I worry a lot, and I need to stop that.

Okay, that's enough for now. I just have a lot on my mind... photo of the day to be posted later :)

Check, check, check, and ...check.

So, I'm making some progress on my 101 list!

Yesterday I conquered two!
#21 -- Design my own photo brand/logo. So people will stop stealing my wicked photos off of Facebook! .. which is my own fault, but sometimes they're so good I just want to show people! :)
#37 -- Clean out my iTunes. I deleted all those old school rap/pop/anything else I consider annoying songs! I'll probably do this again soon, my music opinion changes daily.

I also purchased my TWLOHA shirt yesterday, but I'm not going to blog it/count it off until it comes in!

When my mom gets back from Cali (which I believe is tomorrow), I'm going to Amazon.com my two camera's in an attempt to get a new one. But, if you have any expertise or knowledge on digital camera's that are actually good - please let me know. I'm just googling info and trying to figure out what's best.

I'm on day six of drinking three bottles of water a day, 100 sit-ups in the morning and evening, taking a daily photo, and no hamburger/pop for a month. I had to restart my 3x daily blood sugar... darn 4th of July got me. In August, I plan to start my food log.

Here's the daily photo (me at work, in a weird mood. haha... and I was too lazy to straighten my hair, but my hair didn't want to cooperate with mousse either - it's doing it's own thing. whatever.)

I'm sure in the next month or two I'll get: my address book updated, my lyric book made, 3 new tops, ice cream from the the ice cream truck, to cook a new food.... Oh my gosh. Okay, I don't know what else I'm going to conquer.

When I started this, I read on someone's that it was fun and made them feel like they were actually accomplishing things. True that! :)

Territorial.

I realized today, that I have a territorial problem.

It is slightly pathetic that I moved the kitchen trash can just inside my hallway, and then put my dish soap and sponge in one of my cupboards. I'm not sure if my suitemate has been using my soap/sponge, but I have a hunch she has a few times, and that grosses me out. She also refuses to split the cost and/or share trash bags. So, she puts all her trash in the trash can, but won't put a new bag in when it needs it.

Whatever.

Today, I cleaned my room/suite and tried to de-clutter my closet of some clothes... I think I took out five shirts? I'm such a bad "what if..." person. I might need that t-shirt at the bottom of the stack to wear for some odd reason, even though I have YET to wear it this year.

I decided that I didn't feel like going to the gym just to ride the bike for 30 minutes and walk out. (That was today's "plan.") So, I decided to get some fresh air and sun and go for a bike ride. Well, north of campus is a little back road that the President of WT lives on (it's also the road many people take to get to Wal-Mart from campus). I thought, "Well, I've always wanted to ride my bike or run down that road, might as well..."

ohmygosh. It was good on the way going, but coming back.... there's a hill that is a LOT bigger when you're on your bike and not in the car. Needless to say, I got a really good work-out today. I was as sweaty and exhausted after that little bike ride (30 minutes, but I went around campus too) as I am when I'm on the treadmill for an hour.

I almost took my camera just in case, but then decided I didn't want to deal with it. Luckily, I did have my phone which takes decent pictures sometimes. So, you get two photos of the day today:

And coming back up the hill...

Also:
I am keeping up with my sit-ups, my 3 bottles of water a day, my month without pop and hamburger, and a daily photo. BAM! :)

Days Like Today.

Wow, today was one of those so-long-feels-like-an-entire-weekend days, but entirely enjoyable.

I actually celebrated July 4th, usually our 4th consisted of nothing ALL day... and then a simple firework show at night.

This year:
- hour long parade
- Subway (okay, we were going to eat fair food, but the liness were ridiculous)
- splitting a large bag of kettle corn between Taylor and I :)
- walking around the "Fair on the Square" for all of 15 minutes
- relaxing with AC at the girls' apartment
- a healthy, grilled meal
- 3 hours at the park with pictures and relaxation
- FIREWORKS!
- homemade ice cream, chocolate zucchini bread and watermelon

Days like today make up for all the bad days. Or at least bad days within the last month. Days like today make me SO glad that I stayed down here for the summer. They remind me I have some of the best friends that I wouldn't trade for the world.

While I was sitting at the park for three or so hours, I thought of something. 16 years ago, on a day that is supposed to be full of celebration and fun, I was in the hospital. It was the day that changed the rest of my life. But here I am, 16 years later... having one of the best days of my summer. Obviously, it was a little more fun because of the holiday, but it's still just a weird feeling. Part of me is glad I don't remember that day, that I can't re-live it in my mind... but a smaller part of me wishes I could. It was the day that really did change my future, but I have not the slightest memory of it. Even though I wasn't born diabetic, I might've as well been... those first three years I have NO memory from (obviously, no one really does...), which I think is to my advantage - because then I didn't have to stop eating sugary stuff, etc. I just grew up this way.

Okay, done with that tangent. Basically, today I realized how thankful I am for where I live (in general, America, and specifically, Canyon) and my friends and everything that's been thrown my way (good and bad).

My photo of the day is of my friend Taylor at the park:

#82 with a little extra.

#82 on my list -- Celebrate my diabetic birthday.

[This blog is supposed to be my blog for Friday, but it is almost 1 a.m. on Saturday.... Oh well.]

Ellie always goes out with some friends and celebrates her "diabetic birthday" (day she was diagnosed), but I never have. My friends just weren't into it... parents thought it was weird to celebrate... etc. This year, since I'm kind of 'on my own' I decided I wanted to finally celebrate. So we did.

Taylor, Amanda and I dressed up (sorta) and went to - of course - Olive Garden! The last time we went, we all just got the salad because we love it and it's only $5 and comes with free/unlimited breadsticks. That was the plan for this time, with maybe an appetizer or dessert. The girls decided they wanted to get entrees, but being the cheap person I am... I decided to just stick with salad. Though, I did end up getting dessert with a little something extra:

Not only did the waitress decide to surprise me with candles, but she also gave it to me for free! :) Anddddddd, the girls were so nice and split the cost of my salad. So, this year not only did I get a free meal for my birthday ('rents), but my diabetic birthday too! Thanks girls :) This was the first diabetic birthday I've ever celebrated, and it was extra fun/special.

Just to add a little extra fun into the night, we decided to take a little adventure... or I guess I did. See:

Yep. Little ol' me decided to be brave and get a new piercing. I got really light headed a little after the needle went in, which was surprising, seeing as.... I'm diabetic. Haha. But no fainting or anything of the sort. I can't wait for the two months to be over so I can take out the hoop and put in a regular earring though!

So, knocked ANOTHER item off my list and fully enjoyed it! :) It is officially my 16th diabetic birthday, so cheers to me. I'm sure I'll have something eventful to blog about on Sunday. Until then....

What's your D-Story?

I entered this little short story on this website that I found thru the Daily Diabetic blog. The winner gets to a trip to Miami Speedway! :) Finalists will find out on July 15th. I thought I'd just share the story with you.... enjoy!

Celebrate. That's not usually the word people correlate with diabetes. Maybe a birthday or national holiday, but not a chronic illness - especially if diagnosed as a toddler. Which, I was - at age three. So, I had three glorious years of living without diabetes, and I don't even remember them. Even though it's certainly not a holiday, I was diagnosed on a holiday - July 4, 1993. The day our nation declared it's independence is also the day my independence began forming. Maybe my independence didn't begin right away, seeing as a three-year-old can't give themselves shots and whatnot. But, four short years later, I was! I guess you could say that was a big year for me. That summer, my parents did one of the best things they could've ever done for me. i was sent to a week long summer camp that was just for diabetics. This camp taught me about insulin, blood sugar testing, and healthy eating over the next nine years. But, more importantly, it gave me friends. Friends who knew what it felt like to be the only diabetic in school, to be low during class, or to take four shots a day. Sometimes people become "burnt out" on diabetes - and one of the reasons being a lack of a support system. I don't have that problem though. Diabetes made me stronger and smarter as an individual, especially through the tough times. It's made me healthier. Most of all, it gave me a strong sense of independence and a best friend to call if I feel like diabetes is getting the best of me. So, instead of pouting about diabetes, I celebrate what's it given me.

#81 and #95. BAM!

Meet Becky.

When I moved after preschool, this girl became my best friend. Her dad was my pastor, and her mom baby-sat me everyday. We had crazy fun, and then some interesting time-outs. :) In psychology my senior year (I think it was in psychology), I learned that who you are around in your younger years helps form your personality - this chick is that person. She is the one who made me wacky, and I love her :) Too bad we go to college about 10 hours apart :(

So, we decided to meet up today (she's living in Pampa, TX for the summer) to go out for lunch and shop. Trying to find a place to eat, she suggested Fazoli's because it was her favorite restaurant. Well, I've always wanted to try that place AND it meant I could check something off my list [and not get too far off my healthy eating]! Bam! Check it:

So, we spent the afternoon shopping and I managed to find a second summer dress - for $7. Impressive, I know. Vanity sales! It's purple, and came with this scarf.... that I will not be wearing. Haha.

On the way home, I heard that Nickelback song, "If Today Was Your Last Day" and fell in love with these two verses:

Against the grain should be a way of life
What's worth the price is always worth the fight
Every second counts 'cause there's no second try
So live like you're never living twice
Don't take the free ride in your own life

and

And would you call those friends you never see?
Reminisce old memories?
Would you forgive your enemies?
And would you find that one you're dreaming of?
Swear up and down to God above
That you'd finally fall in love if today was your last day?

Which I found oddly appropriate.
- Why do so many people just follow suit of everyone else? Why are so many people to be different? I must admit, I used to be guilty of this - just following the crowd, and yes... I'm guilty of it sometimes. But, I'd have to say in the last year I have become more independent. Just because no one wanted to go work-out, I didn't sit in my room. If I wasn't comfortable in a situation, I made it clear. I didn't let people push me around and make me do whatever they wanted.
- Today, in so many shops, I would pick something up and say, "OH! This is cuuuute." And five minutes later, I would have sat it down and walked away. Which is good for my wallet, but Becky kept saying, "Then WHY don't you get it?!" I'm the opposite of a compulsive buyer - I pick something up, walk around with it for five minutes and set it down. I do it in Wal-Mart with food (three weeks ago I did that with a box of graham crackers).
- Well, I met with an old friend ... so that's self-explanatory. :)
- Maybe that means I'll find a guy today? Maybe one that wears a knee brace? Hahahahahaha. We'll see.

OH! And, Taylor made a 101 list, thanks to my advice. Allowing me to check #95 off my list :)

#66 with glucose tabs.

Today was the weirdest/most random day of my life, or at least top three. But in a good way, for the most part.

Early morning (before 5 a.m.) I vaguely remember waking up and eating 12 glucose tabs - which are sugar tablets I eat when my blood sugar is low. Well, you're not supposed to eat more than like 3 or 4. So I woke up expecting to have an outrageously high number - nope, 127. Perfecto.

Driving to class, I text Ellie and Pete. Pete responds, and proceeds to tell me that I woke him up, and he was having a low blood sugar. Wow, so if I hadn't randomly texted him, he wouldn't of woken up. After class, I text Ellie again, and she responds that she overslept, and my text woke her up AND she's having a really low blood sugar. Wow, twice in one morning? As my dad said, the Lord communicates in different ways - I guess now he's into texting! Haha, gotta love my dad.

Then, at work I realize I have lost the mail key. Awesome. I'm freaking out, calling UPD, etc. No luck. Randomly, my doctor calls me to say they have an opening - for tomorrow. But, in order to go to the appointment I have to take off both jobs. So, I desperately try to find a cover for the gym. Found one. Tell the secretary at this job I won't be in tomorrow - and in the process of all this, make plans with a friend from out of town to meet up and hang out tomorrow. Get off work, call the doctor - nope, they filled it already. So, I cancel the gym cover, but ask for next week. Don't cancel at the office, (oops.) and keep plans with the friend.

Get off work, get ready for job #2 and what do you know - my mail key is in my gym bag. Note to self: run that to the office in the morning.

I'm sitting at ID checker at the gym, and I start to feel funny. Check my blood sugar - 91. Presto. Well, eat one tab just for good measure. Five minutes later, still feel funny... eat another tab. Five minutes later, still feel funny... check - 67. Okay...? How did I drop? Over-treat and eat about 5. Later on in the shift, I wanted to check and see if I needed to take insulin because I overtreated. Nope - 108. WHAT?! Where are all these good blood sugars coming from, and why do I have a bad A1C!

Weird day over. Finally.

In un-weirdness, I started three of my 101 tasks today, AND checked one off!
I took a daily photo (below), drank three bottles of water, and did my sit-ups. The task I completed was #66 -- Try turkey burgers. It was GOOD! I promise! It'd be good if you used some seasoning, but I'm too cheap to do that. This was the first meal I actually made, usually if I have to fend for myself I just eat random things, and don't actually put all of the food on one plate.

I ended the meal with a strawberry/banana/yogurt smoothie. Mmmmmm. :)

Healthy Tips for the Day :)

Due to recent events, I decided to post some healthy tips online for you all :) Let me know if you have any questions! Warning: I am NOT an expert, these are just tips I have learned through classes/experience.

Okay, first of all the following does NOT work:

- starving yourself completely

- eating less than 1500 calories a day

- working out hard, and then eating whatever you want

- going on a specific diet; like a grapefruit diet, a cottage cheese diet, a no carb diet, etc.

  • You need carbs, protein, fruits, and veggies EVERY day.
  • Balance is key – with every category.

  • Lean meat is best; and there's a saying “two legs are better than four, and no legs are better than two.” Meaning: chicken is better than beef, and eggs (or peanut butter) is better than chicken.
  • Pork (sausage, bacon, ham, etc.) is fatty.
  • I thought hamburgers weren’t too bad (I’m talking a simple hamburger, not Big Mac’s) but I found out those are high in fat also, so try LEAN meat or turkey burgers.

  • Part of why many “diets” fail for people is because you try to do too much at once, and/or don’t have enough willpower. Going from eating however you are now to a perfect 10 will not last, unless you have amazing willpower/determination. Also, you shouldn’t think of it as a “DIET,” more like changing your eating habits – because you can’t just eat this way for 6 months, lose weight, and then go back to how you ate before… you will gain the weight back.

  • EAT BREAKFAST – it’s very important. Well, for that matter – don’t ever skip a meal.

  • Try to avoid pop and tea, but if you really can’t try diet or unsweetened. Diet Green Tea has a lot of antioxidants and vitamins, and some say it helps lose weight but I’m not positive about that. Water by far is the best liquid! I also drink Fuze – Low Carb, it really does curb my appetite, and it tastes good. Or, try crystal light if water is too “blah” for you J

  • I’m not saying this is what you SHOULD do, this is just what I do…
  • I’ve only eaten pizza three times, pasta once, and have not had my own serving of fries – all since January. I have not gotten dessert at meals since January (but have gone out for ice cream about three times). Chips I’ve only eaten occasionally, usually if I eat in the student union – which is rare, and they were always the baked kind. Potatoes (mashed or baked) I have avoided.

  • Rice is okay in moderation, and the difference between brown and white rice is minimal – you just get more fiber with brown rice.
  • Oatmeal is a good source of fiber AND protein, and it keeps me fuller after breakfast.

  • I’m currently trying to eat low-fat; meaning no gravy, no eggs (the yellow in ONE egg is enough cholesterol for more than one day! – so I bought the egg beater whites, the liquid, at wal-mart.) I’m drinking non-fat milk (skim or 1% is good too).

  • Things high in starch or carbs (pasta, potatoes) you should eat in low moderation, starch turns to sugar which turns to fat.

Exercise:

  • If you are just starting out, then start with 30 min of cardio a day. If you work-out some already, then 60 min of cardio is better. Changing your work-out is essential, otherwise your body/muscles become accustomed to the exercise and you won’t burn as much fat/calories.
  • Cardio: running or swimming are by far the best, if you have bad knees, try the elliptical (and make SURE you use the arm handles, it’ll help tone up your arms!) or the bike (raise your seat higher, less movement on the knees) but the bike isn’t as beneficial for full cardio.
  • If you are going to be lifting, you have two options: do full body every OTHER day, or do upper body one day, lower the next, upper, lower… etc.
  • If you are doing an intense work-out, you need to rest one day a week.
  • You can NOT target spot/burn one area, i.e. – your stomach, you can’t JUST do abs and expect to get a six-pack. You can work extra in that area, but you need to work all aspects of your body.
  • Drink water before/during your work-out, and try to drink Gatorade or G2 (G2 is better because of less calories and sugar), to regain your electrolytes.
  • Make sure to stretch!

Eating healthy and working out can’t help you lose weight by themselves, you have to do BOTH.

Mindless Thoughts.

Notes of today:

 - I am halfway done with creating my watermark. I just can't figure out how to make it transparent or... whatever, so that I can place it on my photos!

 - I'm starting on two of my tasks of the 101 in 1001 list tomorrow!

 - I'm wearing my new summer dress right now. I'm enjoying the dress more than I thought I would... I almost want to go buy one in every color!

 - I had a blood sugar of 95 before breakfast, and 112 after yoga. BOO-YAH!

 - I may have found a new work-out buddy; the secretary in the office I work at.

 - For the first time, I am celebrating my diabetic birthday this year! Some friends and I are going to go eat at Olive Garden on Friday (since Saturday will be filled with 4th festivities).

 - I'm getting a raise at one of my jobs soon! YESSSSSS!

 - Only a few days left in the cafeteria, which is good and bad; good because I can eat healthier and not worry about camp kids, but bad because that means I have to cook for myself!

That's all for today. :)
